A modernist home designed to sit lightly on the landscape, following the natural slope of Castle Hill with a cranked floor plan that minimises excavation.

Dark timber tones contrast with the light, cantilevered structure, creating a refined yet understated presence. The home frames key views towards Magnetic Island, with seamless indoor-outdoor transitions that enhance the connection to nature.

Lot 11 is one of the five homes in the Castle Hill Master Plan. This home is inspired by the gentle curves and warm earthy tones of a Southeast Asian villa, carefully designed to foster tranquillity and timelessness.

The design incorporates screens and shadows to enhance privacy while adding visual intrigue.

The master plan prioritises seamless indoor-outdoor living, with open layouts that connect interior spaces to verdant landscaping and natural surroundings.

Project Type

Residential

A refined balance of warmth and simplicity, this home draws inspiration from Southeast Asian villas while responding to the rugged terrain of Castle Hill. The home steps up with the landscape, creating a dynamic yet grounded presence. Timber battens and layered screening provide privacy and soften the transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The design emphasises openness, with breezeways and shaded terraces fostering a strong connection to nature. Carefully curated materials and an earthy palette ensure that the home feels both timeless and intimately tied to its surroundings.

Project Name

MMC Social Housing

Location

QLD Wide

Phase

Concept Design

Project Type

Residential

Affordable, modular housing inspired by Queensland’s coastal shacks, designed for adaptability and efficiency.

The design incorporates fibre cement cladding, skillion roofs, and clerestory windows within modular layouts, prioritising efficiency, affordability and adaptability. The homes are offered in two- and three-bedroom configurations optimised for transportation and regional housing needs.

Strategic design elements such as natural light-filled living spaces, soft matte finishes, and distinct datum lines ensure these modular housing solutions don’t compromise on appeal or comfort.

This approach transforms modular housing into thoughtfully designed homes, balancing cultural resonance with the practical demands of QBuild’s Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) program.

Project Name

Pat's House

Date

2024-

Location

Townsville, QLD

Phase

Design Development

Project Type

Residential

A solid, grounded structure embedded into Castle Hill, designed to work with the terrain rather than against it. The exaggerated roofline runs perpendicular to the slope, reinforcing the home’s architectural stance.

A strong datum defines the materiality- a darker rendered base anchoring the building, with two prefabricated levels in a lighter tone resting above. Designed for adaptability, the home functions efficiently for two but expands seamlessly when family returns. A continuous balcony wraps the facade, opening up panoramic views of Magnetic Island.
